Jeff’s story: Giving back to Harlow

Jeff, one of our active volunteers, joined Citizens Advice Harlow after retiring from full-time work.

“After retiring, I wanted to find a part-time opportunity where I could contribute to the community. As someone who was born in Harlow and has lived here my entire life, volunteering locally was important to me.”

After applying, interviewing, and completing his induction, Jeff began adviser training.

“The training was thorough and wide-ranging, preparing me for the broad range of client enquiries we receive. I still continue to learn new things every week.”

With strong support from supervisors and fellow staff and volunteers, Jeff gained confidence and found his own approach to helping clients.

“My IT skills aren’t the strongest, but I’ve found a way to work effectively. The knowledge, professionalism, and compassion of everyone at Citizens Advice Harlow never cease to impress me.”

For Jeff, volunteering is about purpose and community.

“Overall, I genuinely feel that I’m giving back to the Harlow community. It’s incredibly rewarding to know you’ve helped someone find a way forward. Hearing a client say ‘thank you’ always means a lot.”
