From crisis to stability: Arlo’s story

Arlo’s story:

Arlo is of working age, single, and currently homeless, living out of a hotel room. His life has been shaped by complex and severe mental health challenges that have left him unable to work, socially isolated, and dependent on his elderly mother, who is herself in declining health.

He’s been sectioned multiple times and, at one point, even expressed a desire to be sectioned again, not because he wanted it, but because it felt like the only place where he could find structure, safety, and care.

Arlo was referred to us by his GP for help with renewing his Personal Independence Payment (PIP),  a vital financial lifeline for people living with disability or long-term illness.

Engaging with Arlo wasn’t easy. His mental health made communication difficult. But we didn’t give up.

He attended a face-to-face appointment where we patiently supported him through the PIP review application. We guided him on gathering medical evidence, completed the paperwork on his behalf, and posted it off, a small step for some, but a massive hurdle cleared for Arlo.

Outcome:

Arlo was awarded Enhanced Rate PIP: £184.30 per week, that’s £9,583.60 per year.

For Arlo, this isn't just money.
It’s stability.
It’s dignity.
It’s breathing room from the constant stress and anxiety that come with financial insecurity.

This award allows him to take small steps toward a more independent life and helps ease the burden on his mother, giving both of them the space to simply breathe.
