Client profile

Brett was in his twenties, trying to rebuild his life after prison. With no job, no income, and the weight of caring full-time for his unwell father, every day felt like an uphill battle.

Reason client needs advice:

Brett was doing everything he could, applying for jobs, trying to move forward, but nothing was coming through. The pressure was building, and financially, things were becoming critical.

He didn’t know where to turn or that help might even be available. It was his Probation Officer who finally referred him to Citizens Advice Harlow.

What we have done to help the client:

When we spoke with Brett, one thing became clear: he’d been facing this alone.

Our adviser talked him through his options and completed a full benefits check, uncovering support he didn’t know he could access, support that could change his situation entirely.

Brett could be eligible for:
• £157.70 per month in Universal Credit
• £315.90 per month in New Style Jobseeker’s Allowance
• £45.07 per month in Carer’s Allowance

Outcomes:

Brett’s application was successful and is now £518.67 every month.

For the first time since leaving prison, there was breathing space. Stability.

This support means he can continue caring for his dad without the constant fear of how he’ll get by,  while still searching for work and taking steps towards a better future.

Client reflection:

“I didn’t even know I could get help,” he told us.

Now, with the right support in place, Brett feels more hopeful, more in control, and better able to face each day, and looks forward to the future ahead.
