Supporting Sandra towards independence and better health

Sandra’s story:

Sandra, a pension-age woman living with her husband in their mortgage-free home, had been struggling silently. Living with multiple health conditions and restricted mobility, she wasn’t receiving any care, simply because she couldn’t afford it.

During a routine GP appointment, Sandra opened up about her challenges. Recognising her vulnerability, the GP referred her to our service for support.

We arranged a face-to-face advice session at her GP surgery, where our adviser introduced Sandra to the possibility of claiming Attendance Allowance (AA), a benefit for people over State Pension age with care needs. Sandra was given the helpline telephone number to request the form, and when it arrived, she reached out for further help.

Our adviser supported her in completing the complex application form in a follow-up appointment and submitted it on her behalf. In addition, Sandra was guided to apply for Council Tax Support from Harlow Council, easing her financial burden as a pensioner.

Outcome:

Sandra was awarded the enhanced rate of Attendance Allowance, £110.40 per week, totalling £5,740.80 a year. This financial support enabled her to hire a professional carer, significantly improving her quality of life, supporting her health needs, and restoring her independence.
